Iwo Jima, Japan's last attempt

Iwo Jima

While in Europe the UK, the USSR and the USA fight to defeat Germany in a one-year-long conflict, in Asia it's completely different. In fact, from when the Japanese Empire attacked Pearl Harbour, the American Army and Navy started a long campaign through all the islkands in the Pacific Ocean. But what does Iwo Jima have to do with this? Well, in Iwo Jima there was the last and perhaps the most famous battle in the Pacific War.

It all starts the 19th of February 1945, when a garrison of Marines land on the Island, and there hell falls on them. Yes, because Japanese soldiers constantly attacked them with banzai charges and hidden bombs. On the 1st of April many other men land on the island included the military medic Desmond Doss, which will become famous because of his heroic gestures

during the battle.

During the month of April, the Americans occupied much of the island and on the 24th of April, 5 soldiers hoisted the American flag on the summit of the Island, communicating that the island wa conquered, however, 4 of the five soldiers were killed ten minutes later by a sniper.

There aren't many things to say about Iwo Jima in comparison to the things we can say about the hero of the battle:Desmond Doss. Doss enlisted in the army in 1942 and wanted to serve as a medic because he was a conscientious objector (he couldn't kill people or touch weapons for religious reasons) but he still reieved standard training. He was deployed in Iwo Jima with the second wave of Marines and saved countless lives during the battle. After the war, he was awarded many medals including the Purple Heart and the Honor Medal. He sadly died in 2006 at the age of 87.

As I said before, there aren't many things to say about Iwo Jima because it was a fast encirclement of an Island. After the battle, however, the Japanese didn't surrender and they surremdered when, after the USA nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the American ships arrived in the bay of Tokyo.
