Waterloo, Napoleon's last battle
Waterloo
It's the evening of the 17th of June of 1815, in the Brabant region of Belgium, a man is looking at the army he will fight the following day:that man is Napoleon Bonaparte. Now, what was Napoleon doing in a small village in central Belgium when the whole of Europe is at war with him? Well, he is there with 74,000 soldiers to fight a critical battle in his return campaing: the battle of Waterloo.
But how did we arrive to this point? Long story short, Napoleon escaped from his exile at the Isola d'Elba, he took back his power in France and is trying to re-conquer Europe. Returning to Waterloo; Napoleon needed to be as ready as possible to fight. The night passed fastly and the day of the battle arrived. The emperor had to fight the British, the Prussians, the Dutch and
troops from the Western German States and his troops were in the middleof the two enemy armies.
The battle started with Napoleon taking ground and the Dutch divisions having trouble, but then the armies of Wellington (the British commander) and of Von Blücher (the Prussian commander) attack on the flanks of Napoleon's formation. At noon the situation for Napoleon is critical: he lost ground and has severe casualties, but he decides to continue to fight. During noon he will continue to lose ground and soldiers, and at the evening, the british will arrive to his headquarters and will arrest him.
This will be the last battle of Napoleon, because the British will then bring him in Saint Helen's Island, where he will live untill his death. I like to remember Waterloo as the epilogue of a great adventure which were the napoleonic wars, and for me Napoleon will always be the greatest general in history.
